Documenting Winter turning to Spring

Winter to Spring

When thinking about what to do for the documentary project I knew I wanted to take all my pictures outside.  That being said, I realized that it was the perfect opportunity to document the changing weather.  Also, since the change from Winter to Spring is so dramatic I knew you would be able to see the change very clearly between photographs.

 Fresh Blanket of Snow

This was one the first picture I took once the project was assigned.  I was able to get up early enough to take a picture of the snow before it was messed up.  This picture is cold a crisp and shows very clearly what winter looks like and feels like.

 The Meltdown Begins
I took this picture on the first warm day of the year.  There was still snow outside but it was melting very quickly.  This shows the crazy weather we had this year and how it could be so warm out and still have huge piles of melting snow all over.

Fighting off the Cold
I took this picture the morning after that late winter snow fall.  Most of the snow was melted by the time I woke up but I found this flower in the shadows behind a building, trying to fight off the cold.  I really like the contrast between the bright spring colors and the white of the snow.

Waiting on that Spring Warmth
This picture documents the constant changing weather during the transition from Winter to Spring.  One day it could be warm and sunny and the next it could be cool and cloudy like in this picture.  Soon enough these trees will be in full bloom and the skies will be cloud free.

Trees in Blossom
This picture shows the very beginning of the spring season.  All of the snow has melted and the trees are just beginning to bloom.  You can tell that this picture is already much warmer than the original pictures.

 Padua Beach is Alive
This picture was taken on top of Padua Hall and shows "the beach" in full swing.  The warm vibrant colors show that this is the warmest day of the year so far and that everyone is enjoying it.  You can see the trees are even more in blossom and that all of snow is completely melted.

April Showers...
This picture does a great job of showing how the rainy days here at Siena.  Although is is rainy and cloudy you can see the the grass is green and vibrant and the trees are in full bloom.  Also the contrast between the flowers and the sky provides a beautiful focal point for the picture.

…Brings May Flowers
Although the rain makes everyone miserable, without it we wouldn't have pictures like this.  This photo shows the bush in full bloom surrounded by vibrant green grass.  This picture was taken on a very warm and sunny day and I think that the picture shows that.

Senior Day

Senior day. Senior day does not just represent that athlete’s senior year or even the four years at the institution, senior day celebrates everything that athlete has achieved to get to that point and is the moment the athlete is forced to realize that it is all coming to an end.

---------------------------------------

Being born into a family that had already bred 5 water polo players, I spent most of my childhood around the pool deck. I was thrown into a pool quickly after learning how to walk earning the nickname “water baby” and eventually “mermaid”. My parents would tease that they had to bribe me  to get out of the pool after 7 hours of playing in the pool and that chlorine runs through my veins. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that I joined a water polo league at the early age of six, and the rest of history.

Every aspect of my life somehow relates to water polo.

Literally everywhere I look.

5:30 am practices I will not miss. Friday night practices I will not miss. Jumping into a cold pool twice a day I will definitely not miss. But I will miss the feeling of walking into the locker room and seeing all familiar faces. Singing in the locker room, cheering after a hard lift, spending all your free time with your teammates in addition to the 20 hours of practice a week, these people become your family. Seeing clothes and towels thrown across the room, this was my environment and this is where I felt most at home. Sitting in the same seat for film every Wednesday for the past four years gives me a sense of place and stability that I am not ready to be detached from.

The janitors hated us but we can't help it!

The dreaded cardio workouts.

The Turchi Room where we were forced to watch the games we lost repeatedly.

Over and over again.

Every athlete knows Senior Day is coming for four years and should come as no surprise. But it does. Streamers above the doors, flower leis, posters on the windows, and balloons in every corner all stir up the most bittersweet of emotions. Seeing friends and family in the stands, the adrenaline before the sprint, it all seems to mesh into a blur. During these moments, happiness and sadness play a game of tug-of-war until it all is quickly over.

Locker room decorations.

Flower leis all the way from Hawaii!

And then it is really all over. 14 years of playing the sport of water polo finished in a matter of an hour. As much as we all complain about practice and dread getting into the pool, almost instantly that feeling of having practice is missed. Being on a D1 team, the level of companionship among the team and level of hard work is rarely matched in any other group setting, which will undoubtedly be missed by all. Senior day came and went becoming one of the fondest memories I will have of the one thing that took over the first quarter of my life, water polo.

Lost Forever.

Forever Lost.

This series of images tells the story of a young girl’s
quest to find that something she is longing for, only to
come up short handed. Her search becomes cyclical,
as if it is second nature.

Inspired by Pretty Lights.

So Bright
“The light is shining bright.
So bright, so bright, I forgot I'm blind.”
Someday Is Everyday
“It's been a long time coming.
Change is gonna come."
Finally Moving
“Just want to tell ya right now,
I really do feel it.”
Press Pause
"Everyone gets older all the time,
But the world is spinning slower in my mind."
Vibe Vendetta
"Dreamin' of the day,
When all the pain will fade away."
Around the Block
“We keepin’ everything moving while the
Sun is shining.”
We Must Go On
“I wish that I could tell you how I feel.
It's so real, it's so real.”
Go Down Sunshine
“Go down sunshine,
See what tomorrow brings.”

Contracting in Manhattan

Contracting in Manhattan

Following my father's asphalt company one Saturday morning

For my photography project, I decided to document a day in the life of a New York City contractor. I chose this theme to document because my father owns a asphalt contracting company and I have worked with him since I was 13. On Saturdays, the famous island of Manhattan is usually the destination for the day's job locations. This was because of the zoo that the city is during the week, you ever try driving into Manhattan on a week day morning? Brutal. Growing up, being at middle school and high school, working on Saturday's was a normal occurrence. This is when I fell in love with New York City, the skyscrapers, the pace of the rush, the big scale fashion and style. All of this reminded me, every single time I drive into the city, how much I wanted to live here when I was in my twenties. My dad has been working in NYC since he immigrated to New York from Ireland. I know, I know an Irishman working in contracting in New York City, how original? However, I could not of asked for a better opportunity and experience every summer in my teenage years. This documentation will show you the very normal and extraordinary day I experienced each and every Saturday growing up.

Working with an asphalt company was not all positive, the wake up call on most Saturday mornings was about 4:30am to be at the yard by 5:30am. This was exactly the best situation for a lazy teenager, but my dad made sure my lazy bottom was up and ready to work with a coffee and half a bagel every morning. The dawning sky and the dump truck that has been around longer than I have really symbolize two things for this image. The early mornings and the longevity my dad has been working in this business.

Once everyone in the crew gets to the truck yard, my father and I usually drive the Mack truck, we call "Ol Smokey". We drive the rigged old truck to the asphalt plant, we is what is documented here. Huge contraptions, assembly lines, and 100 foot silos (seen here), all make up the 350 degree "black gold" as my dad calls it.

Once the silos are ready to go, the operator of the plant calls my father through the direct line, my dad asks for the amount of tons he needs for the day. Then the gates open up, as seen here, looking like a volcano erupting with all the "black gold" pouring in and all the smoke pouring out of the trucks body. If only you could be there for the intense smell that fills the air, almost impossible to breathe.

After the "black gold" is covered to stay hot, the trip begins towards our location, the greatest city in the world. The views driving on the Long Island Expressway towards the city are unforgettable and never cease to amaze me and give me chills. The second of the two images, Ol Smokey's truck emblem is the Mack bulldog. Since 1985, that bulldog has seen everything through every season throughout the years.

Once we get into the city, the tourism is over and I am reminded of why I am really here in the first place: to bust my hump and get paid. My father usually never had a problem telling me that growing up, always teaching me a valuable lesson in working hard. Documented here is the bobcat with the grinding attachment, which rips up the old asphalt to create a grove in the street, which allows for the new asphalt to be cemented in the ground.

After the grinding and ripping up is done, the crew sweeps and shovels the old asphalt and gravel into the bucket attachment of the Bobcat. Not out of the Blue, we are located on 5th Ave and 48th street, and anyone that knows the city, knows what is located behind. That is Rockville Center and 30 Rock. The American flags also symbolize something within the company. Hugo Guerro, the Bobcat operator, just received his American citizenship and he was aloud to go see his mother and father for the first time in 19 years.

After cleaning up, it is time to pave, the truck is raised, the roller is off the truck and the crew has their shovels and rakes ready to go. After looking north on 5th Ave, we are looking south on 5th Ave, and look closely at the skyline. I think everyone knows that building, the great Empire State Building, we see it at almost every job location we have. My father always told me, "everyone in the world dreams of coming to this city just to see that building and the skyline, and we see it everyday."

After the job is paved and the tools and machines are put away, the crew climbs into their spot in each one of the trucks and drives back to the yard. Another day another dollar is what it means to the men on the crew supporting families and their life. To me, it is a life lesson: working hard in the city that I love, motivates and sets my goals that maybe one day, I'll be watching some one else dreaming through my apartment window.

CBI Tournament Champions

A look into the Saints first national postseason tournament championship

I grew up around Albany and my Mom attended college at Siena in the 80s.  When I was two years old my parents started taking me to Siena men’s basketball games, mostly just to get out of the house.  But as I got older I ended up getting really into it and eventually knew more about basketball, the Siena team, and the coaching staff than my parents did.  I’ve always hated winter, so Siena basketball has continued to be one of the few upsides to the harsh upstate climate.  Although the past few seasons had losing records, I was still eagerly looking forward to see what the new coach and freshmen could bring this year: and it was definitely rewarding.
With a loss to Canisius in the quarterfinal of the MAAC tournament this year, everyone thought the Siena men’s basketball season was over.  Siena was picked in the coach’s preseason poll to finish the season 10th out of the 11 teams in the MAAC considering the losing records of previous years, the new head coach this season, and the very young team.  However, after a hard fought season with countless games coming down to the wire, Siena fans were content with the rally the team made to land an impressive 5th place in the MAAC.  And everyone thought it was over, until an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational post-season tournament sparked new interest.  Not only were the Saints given an opportunity to continue a building season, but the fans were also thrilled that these games would be decided on their home floor at the Times Union Center.
After fending off Stony Brook, Penn State, and Illinois State on their home court, the Saints made it to the championship of the CBI tournament against Fresno State, a title that would be given after a series of games, best two out of three.  The first game of the series required the Saints to fly across the country to play at Fresno State in California, where the Saints were seen as the slight underdogs especially considering their lack of home court advantage the team has been known to thrive on.  Shockingly, the Saints sliced a twelve point second half deficit to win 61-57 on the road.  This was a huge win, the one we desperately wanted, and it stirred up overwhelming hype back in Loudonville.  The second, and potentially final game would be played back on the Saints home court, but not the home court they’ve been used to.  Due to scheduling conflicts with the Times Union Center, it was decided the second game of the series would be played on the Siena campus at the Alumni Recreation Center.

When tickets went on sale for the game, hundreds of fans and students lined up to get their hands on tickets to the first men’s basketball game played on campus in 17 years.  Fans started rallying into the gym two hours before the game, and by tip off it was so loud the announcer couldn’t even be heard over the booming chants from the stands.  Unfortunately, the team did not take well to this change in atmosphere and came up short of the win forcing a game three.  Game three of the CBI tournament championship was also to be decided on the Saints home floor, and this time they came ready to play.  Eleven seconds into the game the Saints took the lead with a Brett Bisping three-pointer and never looked back.  Patsos and the Saints held this lead the entire game and eventually ended with an 81-68 victory over Fresno State.  And the crowd went wild.  Fans stormed the court as “We are the Champions” blared through the loud speakers.  The emotion became even more vivid when the trophies were presented and the nets were cut down.  Siena fans eventually filed out of the ARC satisfied with the joy of this unlikely end to a building season and renewed with hope to see how this team will perform next year.
The student section in the ARC was packed for the first men's basketball game on campus in 17 years.

Saints Take On Manhattan

Saints Take on Manhattan

With the MAAC tournament creeping around the corner, the Siena College Men's Lacrosse Team take on Manhattan College in their final regular season game. The Saints are undefeated in the MAAC conference and if they beat the Manhattan Jaspers they will clinch first place for the tournament.  I decided to take photos of this day because I wanted to look back after the game is see on the team looks when we are preparing for a game.  I loved how different emotions came out in each photograph.  I also wanted to give people an inside look of our team attitude on game day.

Conor "Heisman" Prunty

In the fall Conor Prunty was project to earn MAAC PLAYER OF THE Year. Conor has been started with a freshman and burst onto the scene his sophomore year when he scored 4 goals versus Johns Hopkins University. We seem him here making his way to the dining hall for team lunch.

In the striped polo is John Svec the head coach for the Saints.  He is in his third year and is looking for his first MAAC championship.  He sits with his fellow coaches discussing their strategy of how to attack and defend the opponent.

Lunch Time

There is are mixed emotions here with the senior always eating while the freshman wait their turn in line.

Max Bonsall from Rye, NY is very excited to eat his eggs.

Pack Your Bags

Here is a look inside the Saints locker room as they pack their bags for the trip to Manhattan.   This room is where the continuity between all of the saints come together.

Mee-Man

Brendan Meehan is one of our fifth year seniors and in my opinion is one of the best players on the team.  After suffering an injury filled season last year, Brendan decided to stay another year, and double majoring in Finance and Accounting.  We see him here using top patches to keep is quads from tightening up.

Ort

This is our team trainer Anthony Ortalano.  After retiring from RPI he decided to volunteer and join the Saints.  Best known as "Ort" he brings a ton of knowledge to both the players and the coaching staff.
