The Exciting Life of Eddie Lewicki
It is every little leaguers dream to play at the professional level and make it to the MLB. Another dream of baseball players around the world is when they get into high school is to sign a Division I letter of intent. The documentary project was fun to do because I chose to take pictures of Eddie Lewicki. The reason I chose to violate Ed's privacy was to take a look into the life of a Division I baseball player. Ed is an exciting person to follow around because of the different places he is going and his actions when the camera was on him were priceless.
I followed Ed all over the place from going to class with him to going to Michigan State, where he got hit with a line drive. Most of the shots that I was able to take were action shot because Ed is always moving around going from place to place, the only time he was somewhat still was when he was sleeping.
Ed starts the day when he wakes up from his deep sleep, on this particular day Ed was sleeping like he was mummified.
Once Ed is out of bed he is ready to walk to photography class, as you can see in this picture it was one of the few nice days at Siena because Ed is in shorts.
On this day in photography class Ed was taking photos of others for his portrait project, so I decided I would use him as my model.
Once he was done taking his pictures, like all photographers he needed to edit his photos.
After Ed goes to photography class he likes to go get a ham and cheese omelet for breakfast at the school's cafe.
When Friday finally arrived, after going to classes all week long and going to practices, we were off on our 11 hour bus trip to Michigan State. When you are a Division I pitcher and have to start on Saturday and you travel through Canada and arrive in Michigan on Saturday morning at 4 a.m., you need to get some sleep on the bus to try to be at your best.
On Saturday it was Ed's turn to pitch versus the Big 10 conference opponent. It wasn't Ed's first time pitching versus a Big 10 opponent, he pitched versus Ohio State earlier in the year. Ed had a strong start going until he threw a fastball on the outside corner to the Michigan State catcher Joel Fisher. Fisher turned the fastball around and hit it right back at Ed. The ball smocked Ed in his lower leg and he went down like a sack of potatoes. Ed had to come out of the game after this because he couldn't put any pressure on his leg. After the game Ed was taken to the hospital to get x-rays, and they showed that nothing was broken he just had a bad bone bruise. Ed was put on crutches and this photo was hard to get since he didn't want to be on them.
Once the weekend was over it was back through Canada to Siena. When we got back Ed was able to put a little pressure on his leg so he lost the crutches. Then he had to get the lump that looked like a softball out of his leg. The way to do this was to rest and go to the training staff and get ultrasound to work the lump out.
Ed has been back in action since getting hit and has thrown really well. He has posted a league leading 0.95 in conference era and is 3-1 in conference play. He is trying to improve his draft stock so that way he might get his name selected by a Major League Baseball team this summer on June 5-7 during the First-Year Player Draft.
I think that this is a cool project, not just because I am the main character but it follows a cool story line. The images used in this project are very cool and were taken at very unique times. Matt took images at different times to show my daily routine. Matt does a great job of typing to put words to the story which the pictures are trying to tell.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very cool and funny project. I enjoyed the storyline and the images. i like how you started off with him knocked out in the morning and ended with him pitching on the mound. Great job.
ReplyDeleteVery entertaining project. I enjoy that this documented his life for a complete day, from waking up for class in the morning to him working the mound. Job well done.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very funny idea. I like how all of the shots are candid. The first picture is hilarious and I like how it ended with a picture of him pitching. Great idea for a documentary.
ReplyDeleteI like this project a lot! I know Eddie so it was funny to see him through this lens. You have a lot of great shots in here!
